Universities and colleges are greater than the courses they offer and the degrees they award. Universities are unique in the resource they possess and the potential they have to improve lives. 

 

In addition to preparing individuals for successful careers, they provide a venue for discovery, inquiry, and for the life of the mind.  In short, higher education should produce graduates who are prepared for a meaningful life, who hunger to learn, and who will have productive and satisfying careers. 

 

But there is yet another purpose, one that was once commonly embraced by colleges but waned in the years following World War II.  Beyond disciplinary education, colleges were committed to preparing students to be good citizens

 

During my career I have sought, in a variety of ways, to advance the connection between higher education and community—whether that community be local or global.

 

To deepen Miami Hamilton’s engagement, I led and supported several initiatives.  This included the creation of the Miami Hamilton Center for Civic Engagement (CEE), Miami University Hamilton Downtown, and a set of promotion and tenure standards for faculty.

 

CCE is responsible for supporting faculty and staff in their service and public scholarship activities, building meaningful relationships with civic, school, government, and other community partners, and identifying and facilitating appropriate engagement projects for the Campus.

 

Miami Hamilton Downtown was created as a venue for community dialogue, faculty, staff, student, and community interaction, art exhibits, and musical performances.

 

Conceptualized as a “third space” that is neither community nor university but instead the intersection between the two, the space is intended to be a safe, comfortable space for residents of all backgrounds to gather to address societal issues and to express themselves. 

 

The set of promotion and tenure standards were the result of a collaboration with my dean colleague at Miami Middletown, faculty, and the university provost. Our goal was to create standards that organize, support, and reward public service and scholarship.
